Nassau Police to Increase Patrols in Jewish Communities

Move comes in light of bus bombing on Israelis in Bulgaria.

The Nassau County Police Department will step up patrols at prospective targets on the Jewish community in light of last week’s terrorist attack on Israeli tourists in Bulgaria.

Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray had requested the patrols in a letter to Commissioner Thomas Dale after last Wednesday’s suicide bus bombing, which killed five vacationing Israelis and a Bulgarian bus driver.

“With the Bulgarian attacks as a backdrop and the domestic terrorism, I certainly know that folks in the Five Towns area specifically are feeling a sense of unease,” Murray told Patch. “The fact remains that increased patrols increases the comfort level of our citizens.”

In Murray’s letter to the commissioner, the supervisor requests boosted patrols “around shuls, temples, yeshiva schools, Young Israel locations and all other sites that could be prospective targets of terrorist attacks on the Jewish community.”

According to a NCPD spokesperson, the K-9 unit, bureau of special operations, emergency service units as well as regular patrol units “will be paying special vigilance to these locations. All commands and precincts have been advised to step up patrols in the area.”

Before writing her letter, Murray consulted with Rabbi Hershel Billet of .

"I told her that we can always use more security. The police are stretched to their limits," he said. "We can never have 'too much' security."

The Hempstead supervisor added that residents should also be aware of their surroundings.

“To borrow a phrase, ‘if you see something, say something.’ That should be the mantra for all of us,” she said. “To have citizen activists call the police if they see something suspicious or feel suspicion, that’s a huge assist to our police officers. They can’t be everywhere at every time.”

Lawrence Mayor Martin Oliner had organized a with that exact message. He said that he is thankful for the stepped-up patrols.

The world is still too immature to outgrow anti-Semitism.

....so does this mean, like when the bomb was detonated on the Spanish passenger train, all the subways passing through spanish-populated areas also received additional PD patrols ? Bulgaria is what, on the other side of the world ? Just sayin'......
Allan July 24, 2012 at 03:10 PM
Well Charles, I suppose that might be appropriate if there was a head of state saying that he wanted to kill all Spaniards and was apparently taking action to do so, all over the world.

Faith based spending by nassau is good and moral

maybe they can use this time to ticket the orthodox for blocking roads on saturday, for blowing stop signs to rush home before sundown on friday, for speeding down central ave and broadway, for double parking on central ave..... no, that would be anti-semetic.

What bothers me the most... and call it what you will. The amount of people I see talking on their cell phones. Why don't you step up patrols on ticketing for that? My daughter is a new driver and it terrifies me that she has to drive the streets of the 5 towns.
Allan July 25, 2012 at 02:12 PM
While they're at it, maybe they could ticket the orthodox-haters for scrawling swastikas on my sidewalk or yelling "dirty kike" at my four year old kid. Or maybe they could just keep them from making anti-orthodox comments on websites. Well, I guess it's a free world...
ftptch July 25, 2012 at 03:05 PM
allan I guess two wrongs make a right in your world??? there is no excuse for an idiot yelling slurs at your child but to say its ok to disregard traffic laws because of that???? that makes no sense.....
AmyNYC July 25, 2012 at 03:51 PM
You all should be ashamed of yourselves. Why the hatred??? Cant we just smile and be happy we live in a free country? If your an angry person look within and improve yourself and I promise you, your hatred will subside!
tam July 25, 2012 at 08:00 PM
No it means that Jewish people are targeted more for some reason and it cant hurt to help JUST SAYING
tam July 25, 2012 at 08:02 PM
Maybe your bieng anti-semetic becasue orthodox are not the only people blowing lights moron thats a really bright comment. I am sure you never got a ticket or did anything wrong on the road right?
ftptch July 25, 2012 at 08:26 PM
tam it is obvious who is doing these things when the minivans are plastered with HAFTR TAG HALB and hebrew bumper stickers..... i dont think southern baptists are the culprits......

ftptch is not wrong, just an idiot. if the orthodox community blatantly disregards the laws of the lan when it comes to cell phones, double parking etc, the police should ticket them as they do others. That said, what ftpch is calling for is a specific action agaisnt a specific group because they are orthodox, which is why it is anti-semitic. Secondly, the article was about police presence to thwart potential terrorist activites that are targeted to a large section of the community and had nothing to do with the issues that you would like to address.

I've lived in Cedarhurst for more than 35 years and in all that time I can't say that I've ever seen an Orthodox Jew block a road on a Saturday or or blow a stop sign to get home by sundown on a Friday. I have seen lots of people speed down Central Avenue or double park, but I can't say that most of them are orthodox. I get the impression that you've got a problem with Jews living in your neighborhood. Maybe you should move?
kevin July 30, 2012 at 04:34 AM
maybe they should move back to brooklyn and not come into our neighborhoods and try to take over, they constantly double park, constantly on the cell phones while driving, walk right in the middle of the street and not even look with their 9 kids following behind them and they show no respect to people outside their religion. ps: i lived in the 5 towns my whole life (over 50yrs) I seen the changes .

Grew up in the 5T, am orthodox, some of you are taking it too far and the entire neighborhood is guilty for speaking on cellphones, double parking etc. However, when you decide to clearly identify yourself as an orthodox jew you should conduct yourself in a way befitting one. It is sickening that many people think that double parking to drop their kid off at the pizza store is more important than letting an ambulance/fire truck through, an incident that I see all too often on central avenue... some people need a reality check

Did I ever so much as mention anything about orthodox people being the only ones? My Goodness you must have a guilty conscience perhaps? Nor did I mention anything about double parking. Trust me my life does not even slightly want to spend time on Hatefulness. My concern is for my child and ALL the idiots on their cellphones while children sit in the backseat watching what great role models they are being to their children

Well said Molly. I also have a daughter whos a new driver and I would love nothing better to see cell phones banned from drivers altogether! Mike Short
