A veteran police officer who was hit by a car Tuesday on Route 878 in Lawrence remains in the ICU at Nassau University Medical Center in critical but stable condition, according to a hospital spokesperson.
Shelley Lotenberg, of NUMC, told Patch Wednesday that the unnamed officer is expected to have surgery tomorrow to repair a pelvic fracture. The officer also sustained a fractured skull, fractured right leg and massive internal bleeding after a 2004 Audi that was being driven by a 43-year-old man struck him. Police said the officer was conducting vehicle and traffic law enforcement just north of the Atlantic Beach Bridge.
Det. Michael Bitsko, a police spokesman, told Newsday that the driver of the vehicle, along with several witnesses, tried to assist the officer after the incident.
The injured officer is a 29-year veteran who has received multiple honors, according to the paper.
The investigation is still ongoing. No charges have been filed against the driver of the Audi.
