Police: Alleged Bike Thieves Thwarted by Owner

Two men who snatched a bicycle outside a Hewlett bagel store were arrested on Tuesday.

Two men were arrested on Tuesday after they allegedly stole a bicycle that was in front of a Hewlett bagel store and were thwarted by its owner, according to police.

Anthony Campbell, 19, of Far Rockaway, along with Cawaun Milam, 19, of Jamaica, allegedly took a mountain bike that was in front of , located at 26 Franklin Ave., around 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, police said. When the 34-year-old owner of the bike saw the two men stealing it, he chased them on foot and grabbed a hold of the bike.

According to police, after a brief struggle in which Campbell took a swing at the victim, the victim got his bike back. The defendants then fled the scene.

Fourth Precinct officers, after receiving a 911 call for the bike robbery attempt, located and arrested the defendants a short time later at Broadway and North Wood Lane in Woodmere.

Campbell and Milam are each being charged with robbery in second degree and are scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
