Police: Father Charged in Daughter's Poisoning (Updated)

Queens man and 2-year-old were found unconscious in a car on Monday.

The father of a 2-year-old girl who was found unconscious in a car in Lawrence on Monday has been charged with her attempted murder in what may have been a murder-suicide attempt, police announced on Wednesday.

Khemchan Sulaiman, 45, of Jamaica, was also found in the car on Monday. A chemical found in fire extinguishers called ammonium chloride was found in the toddler’s bottle and a pesticide known as “Sevin” was found on her car seat, according to police. Chemicals were also found on their shirts.

Both were taken to the hospital in critical condition. The girl was in stable condition on Tuesday.

Det. Lt. Kevin Smith said during a yesterday that Sulaiman is estranged from his wife, but has full visitation with their daughter. Smith said he believed this incident might have been a murder-suicide attempt.

He wasn't sure why Sulaiman drove to Lawrence behind .

Sulaiman was arraigned Wednesday afternoon on a charge of attempted murder in the second degree, and remanded without bail, according to the district attorney's office. He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

Sulaiman is represented by the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County and is due back in court on Oct. 7.
