A man posing as an employee of gas provider National Grid burglarized the home of a 79-year-old woman in Herricks Friday afternoon, Nassau police said.
Police said the man was wearing a yellow work vest and a yellow construction hat when he knocked on the door of a home on Pine Street at around 12:40 p.m.
The man told the woman who answered the door that he was from National Grid and that there had been a gas explosion and that he needed to come inside the home to check the water for a gas leak, police said.
The man told the resident to turn on the faucet in the kitchen while the man continued alone into a bathroom near the master bedroom, police said.
The man stayed in the home for about 20 minutes and then left in an unknown direction, police said. Soon after, the woman discovered assorted gold jewelry missing from her jewelry box.
Police are requesting that anyone with information regarding this crime to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
