Queens Man Arrested for 2009 Shooting in Inwood

Incident resulted in the injury of a bystander.

A 23-year-old St. Albans man was arrested Friday morning for a 2009 shooting incident in Inwood that resulted in a man being shot in the buttocks, according to police.

Durrell Gaines was arrested at 11:10 a.m. in Far Rockaway for the July 5 assault, police said. On that day, Gaines and another man, who has not been caught, allegedly shot approximately seven rounds at 12:15 a.m. on Bayview Avenue after an alteration where firecrackers were thrown at their feet.

One of the rounds hit a 28-year-old man in the buttocks, according to police. The victim was treated and released from South Nassau Hospital. Other rounds struck an apartment building with no other injuries reported to police.

Gaines was charged with criminal use of a firearm, three counts of criminal possession of a weapon, assault in the second degree and reckless endangerment. He was scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Friday.
