Police: Queens Man Assaulted, Bit Officers in Lawrence

The defendant was allegedly shouting and cursing on the street before police officers were called.

A Queens man was arrested in North Lawrence Thursday night after allegedly assaulting multiple police officers.

According to Nassau County detectives, around 7:35 p.m., George J. Towns, 27, of Jamaica, was walking southbound on Lawrence Avenue yelling and cursing, causing neighbors to be alarmed.

As officers from the Fourth Precinct attempted to arrest the defendant, he fought with them, causing himself and the officers to fall to the ground, police said. As the defendant was being placed in the rear of a patrol car he kicked and shoved the officers.

As a result of the struggle, two officers suffered injuries, police said. One officer suffered a sprained wrist, a shoulder and neck injury and was bitten on the hand. The other officer suffered a sprained wrist, sprained shoulder and minor injuries to his arm and leg.

Towns is charged with two counts of assault in the second degree, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. He was arraigned on Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.

The arrest information was supplied by the Nassau County Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.
