Responders Put Out North Woodmere Home Fire

Elderly occupant helped out by two good Samaritans.

Two good Samaritans evacuated an elderly female occupant of a North Woodmere home that caught fire Tuesday evening, according to the chief of the .

At 6:40 p.m., the Hewlett Fire Department received a telephone alarm reporting a fire next to a home on June Place, said Chief Ethan Lahey. The elderly woman was taken out of the home prior to the arrival of first responders. The woman and the two Samaritans were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The fire was contained to two bedrooms of the first floor, Lahey said, and caused extensive damage to the home.

Fifty-five firefighters and six pieces of apparatus put the fire under control at 7 p.m. The Hewlett Fire Department was assisted by the Lawrence-Cedarhurst, Valley Stream, Inwood and Woodmere departments. The Meadowmere, East Rockway and Lynbrook departments were on standby.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal.
