Smoke Causes Evacuation of Brandeis School

Brandeis School was cleared out for about a half hour.

The received a call at 2:30 p.m. Monday for a building fire at the in Lawrence. 

School officials began evacuating the occupied building due to a smoke condition in the gym. LCFD firefighters arrived a minute after the call was reported and began to track down the source.

A ladder company from the Inwood FD also responded on automatic mutual aid.  Firefighters stretched a hose line into the school and the smoke condition worsened.  A burnt out light fixture was found in the gymnasium a short time later.

After approximately 30 minutes students and staff were allowed back into the school.

Nassau Couny Police diverted traffic off Frost Lane from Central Avenue to Broadway during the operation. All fire operations were under the direction of LCFD First Assistant Chief John McHugh.
