Originally posted on Nov. 29, 2013, at 9:59 a.m.

A Thanksgiving evening fire destroyed the second floor of a Cedarhurst home before being put out by firefighters.

The blaze broke out just before 9 p.m. in the kitchen of the home at 575 Peninsula Blvd., according to Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department Assistant Chief Anthony Rivelli. Twenty five volunteers with five trucks were on the scene immediately.

As the fire rapidly spread throughout the home, additional resources were called in from the Inwood, Woodmere, Meadowmere Park, Hewlett and Valley Stream fire departments.

Firefighters mounted an aggressive interior attack with hoselines. The flames were approaching a propane tank on the rear porch and spread up the rear of the home. Crews outside cooled the tank and removed it to the rear yard. As crews battled the fire inside, the floor on the second level of the home began to collapse.

Neither the occupants of the home nor any firefighters were injured. The cause of the blaze is being investigated by the Nassau County Fire Marshal. All operations were under the command of Chief John Mchugh. Peninsula Boulevard traffic was diverted until midnight, when units cleared the scene.
