LIPA: Balloon May Have Blown Out Cedarhurst Transformer

Equipment is intact and working properly, spokesperson says.

A balloon may have caused a power transformer to blow out in Cedarhurst on Central Avenue at Cedarhurst Avenue, according to a Long Island Power Authority spokesperson.

"Upon review there was the possibility that a mylar balloon got up into the wires and wreaked a little havoc," said LIPA spokesman Mark Gross. "There was remnants of balloon strings in the area of that pole, but all our equipment is intact and working up to full potential and no outages."

The responded to the three-part transformer outage at around 1 p.m. but did not have to take action, a fire department spokesman said. No injuries were reported.
