Truck Hits Guardrail, Causing Fuel to Leak onto 878

Originally published Nov. 19, 2013, at 7 p.m

A tractor trailer struck a guardrail on the Nassau Expressway at Burnside Avenue on Tuesday around 1 p.m., causing diesel fuel to leak onto the roadway, according to fire officials.

The driver did not sustain any injuries in the crash.

Firefighters from the Inwood and Lawrence-Cedarhurst fire departments converged on the scene. As they began mitigating the hazardous materials, they learned the driver had just topped off his tank. Officials from the Nassau County Fire Marshal Hazardous Materials Division were called in to assist.

Traffic on the busy roadway was diverted to Rockaway Turnpike. Once the damaged truck was removed from the guardrail, traffic resumed as usual.

Firefighters and officers from the NCPD Emergency Service Unit had the situation under control in an hour.  The accident is under investigation by the Fourth Precinct.
