Unqua Road Hit and Run Victim Dies

Mother of three succumbs to her injuries.

The victim in Thursday's hit and run accident near the Unqua Elementary School has died, police said.

Ellen Meany, 45, died Monday from the injuries sustained in the accident, according to police.

"No words can describe how a loss of this nature affects those who knew her," Deanna Catapano, the school's acting principal wrote in a letter to parents.

Meany was the mother of three Unqua students in grades two four and six. Catapano said that counselors have been made available to students at the school.

She was riding her bike south on Unqua in the northbound lane when she struck the mirror of a parked vehicle near Morris Lane, police said.

She fell off the bike and landed on the road when she was hit by a car. The vehicle, which left the scene is described as a late 1990s model Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable. It has four doors and is colored teal or metallic green.

Police have released a photo of a similar looking vehicle.  Anyone with information regarding this accident should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

"d" it's unfortunate that Unqua Elementary School is one of the only elementary schools in the district that faces a double yellow line road. Unqua Road is very busy and requires heavy police enforcement, because of it's poor location. God forbid Nassau County cops write more tickets, make more money for the county and do extra work, by showing up for court.

@CC parking tickets don't prevent accidents and they don't rescue budgets destroyed by criminal politicians. REST in peace Mrs Meany and God Bless your family.
