Victim in Critical Condition After Boat Capsizes Near Atlantic Beach

A 49-year-old victim has been unconscious since the boat capsized Saturday morning.

One man remains unconcious and in critical condition after a boat he was on capsized off the coast of Atlantic Beach Saturday morning.

According to Nassau County detectives, around 10:50 a.m., while approximately three miles off the shore of Atlantic Beach, six males -- ages 56, 54, 49, 48, 10 and 8 -- went overboard after the 21-foot Cobia Fish Tracker they were fishing from capsized in rough waters.

Nearby fisherman, who observed the incident, rendered assistance and were able to remove five of the six victims from the water and also make contact for the response of emergency personnel, police said.

A joint response by Nassau County Police Department Marine and Air Units, New York Police Department Air Bureau and the Bay Constables responded to the scene, police said.

NYPD Air Unit dropped two rescue divers into the water who were able to remove the sixth victim, who was unconscious and trapped under the boat, police said. He was air lifted by NYPD to an area hospital in Staten Island.

The 49-year-old victim remains unconscious and is in critical condition, police said. The other five victims were removed to area hospitals, were evaluated and released.
