Two Woodmere Fire Department firefighters were recently awarded Nassau County Firematic Awards for their years of volunteer service.
County Executive Edward Mangano on April 21 presented awards to Clarence (Brud) Ike for his 58 years of active service (between the Valley Stream and Woodmere fire departments) and Chief Leonard Cherson for his service during Hurricane Sandy. Cherson rescued his own family during the storm and continued to help other residents despite severe damage to his own house, according to the department.
