Atlantic Beach May Take Over Property

Incorporated village weighs eminent domain option for current site of real estate agency.

The Atlantic Beach Board of Trustees may seek the use of the state’s eminent domain law to take over a property close to village hall.

The board said during its meeting on Monday night that it is considering initiating proceedings against the lot that currently houses M.A. Salazar Realty on the corner of The Plaza and Park Street.

“We should look into a public hearing regarding the property,” said Mayor Stephen Mahler. “Now, under the new condemnation laws, we can do something. We can hold a public hearing under eminent domain law.”

A number of blue, green and black tarpaulins, tied down with heavy ropes, remain draped over the front and back of the single story building located at 2035 Park Street in Atlantic Beach, just a half block away from Atlantic Beach Village Hall. The location ultimately drew the attention of Mahler.

Village attorney Charles Kovit indicated he would look into the matter.

“That’s not going anywhere, that property,” Mahler said.

After the trustees meeting, Mahler hastily left and could not be reached for additional remarks about the address. Neither village hall nor the building department have replied to requests for comment.

In other matters, Danae A. Muddiman was chosen by Mahler to serve as an interim trustee to fill a currently vacant position until the next election. Allan Jacobs was sworn in as Zoning Board of Appeals commissioner, a five-year term, and Steven Watkins was sworn in as Zoning Board of Appeals alternate commissioner, a one-year term.

Resolutions passed:

  • Subdivide existing parcel and maintain existing dwelling on a lesser lot on Pacific Boulevard.
  • The date for the next Village election was set for June 21.
