County to Fix Sidewalks on Branch Boulevard

Work on long-delayed project began on Monday, Legis. Howard Kopel said.

Nassau County on Monday started work on a long-delayed project to fix the sidewalks on Branch Boulevard, Legis. Howard Kopel, R-Lawrence, announced.

“Today is a great day for our community,” Kopel said. “Finally, we begin the long-delayed Branch Boulevard Sidewalk Improvement project construction phase.”

Branch Boulevard, which goes from Cedarhurst to North Woodmere, contains sidewalks that Kopel said are unusable because of deterioration. This presents a hazard to pedestrians, who are forced to walk in the street against vehicular traffic, he said.

The Branch Boulevard Sidewalk Repair Project was “somehow lost in the shuffle by the previous administration,” according to Kopel. The funds for the project were secured with the approval of this year’s Capital Improvement Plan on July 11.

According to the press release, Town of Hempstead Councilman James Darcy referred to the sidewalk conditions as being in a “state of disrepair,” the release said, and four years ago gave Nassau County a “formal written notice … of the deplorable and highly dangerous conditions which exist at this location [at Branch Boulevard]!”
