Election Results Announced at Lawrence Village Board Meeting

Partial list of official village appointments for 2012 also revealed.

Results of the recent village election were revealed at this month’s meeting of the Lawrence Village Board. In addition, Mayor Martin Oliner also unveiled a partial list of official village appointments for 2012.

The official results and winners of the village election held on June 19 are as follows:

  • Martin Oliner - Mayor - 479 votes
  • C. Simon Felder - Trustee - 470 votes
  • Irving Langer - Trustee - 455 votes
  • Donald J. Buchalter - Village Justice - 430 votes

The results have been verified by both the village clerk and the election officer.

While the official appointments of village personnel were originally slated to take place this evening, Oliner made the decision to put off the majority of them until the board’s next public meeting, barring a handful of high-profile positions.

“I’m holding over all of the other appointments until we got the opportunity to make additional suggestions to the list,” he said. “We will announce the rest of the appointments at the September meeting.”

Oliner did present the following partial list of appointments, which were not voted upon that evening:

  • Deputy Mayor - C. Simon Felder
  • Commissioner of Police - Joel A. Mael
  • Fire Commissioner/Commissioner of Finance – Michael
  • Public Works/Parks and Recreation/Sanitation - Irving Langer

However, much to the surprise of the board, Mael immediately turned down the offer of commissioner of police. C. Simon Felder, in addition to his duties as deputy mayor, offered to also assume the duties of commissioner of police in Mael’s stead, a job he had previously held in the past.

“The position of commissioner of police is extremely important,” he said. “I’ve held this position many, many times in the past, and even though it has been suggested for deputy mayor, I would very gladly take on the additional responsibility, if the mayor so chooses.”

However, Oliner instead opted to keep the position vacant for the time being, while expressing that he was let down by Mael’s decision to turn down the role of police commissioner.

“I’m disappointed in the declaration that Joel Mael has made,” he said. “Nevertheless, I’m going to keep that position open for the moment, and leave it unfilled until a later date.”

Other items discussed at the meeting pertained to off-street parking regulations, 2013 golf membership rates at the Lawrence Yacht and Country Club and procurement of a possible replacement of the village’s out-of-order electronic radar speed sign/trailer.
