Hempstead Animal Shelter Hosting 'My Furry Valentine'

A weekly look-in at news from around the Town of Hempstead.

The Hempstead Town Animal Shelter is hosting the “My Furry Valentine” pet adoption event on Feb. 16, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., where cats and dogs can be taken home at no charge.

The animal shelter is waiving all fees on adoptions, which include spaying/neutering, rabies vaccinations and microchipping (cats are tested for feline AIDS/leukemia) from Feb. 9-16.

"I encourage all residents to come down and join us on Feb. 16 to take part in the festivities and find a ‘furry valentine’ to call their own," Shelter Director Cynthia Iacopella said.

Town Announces E-Cycling Program Schedule

E-Cycling

With the rapid pace at which technology is advancing, people are purchasing new computer systems, televisions, DVD players and other electronic components in record numbers. As a result, more obsolete equipment containing toxic materials is entering our waste stream. That's why Hempstead Town is taking responsible and proactive steps to ensure that your old electronic equipment can be recycled and disposed of properly. All computers, computer components, televisions, VCRs and DVD players will be accepted for recycling at our E-Cycling programs. By participating in e-cycling events, toxic materials, such as lead, mercury and arsenic are kept from entering the waste stream.

Pharmaceutical Disposal and Paper Shredding

The town's e-cycling programs have been so successful that we will once again hold four e-cycling events in 2013. What's more, there will be two curbside e-cycling dates to assist town sanitation department customers who want to recycle their electronic devices but are unable to attend an e-cycling program. New pharmaceutical disposal and paper record shredding services will also be made available to residents at e-cycling events. The safe disposal of unused medication and record shredding while you wait and watch will address areas of need at no additional cost to taxpayers.
