Hewlett Harbor May Soon Install New Street Signs

Board of trustees consult residents on proposed signs.

The will soon have all new street signs, according to trustees at last Thursday’s board meeting.

In order to get public input, the board showed a prospective sign to four village residents, who were pleased with the color, shape and the style, as well as the lettering. But, three out of four didn’t like the finial posts and were concerned about the durability of the sign’s finish, according to trustee Thomas Cohen.

“All four residents commented that the green sign clashes with the blue Welcome to Hewlett Harbor sign,” Cohen said.

The residents also inquired whether there will be corresponding street lamps to go with street signs, which is not clear at this time.

Another consideration is the height of the proposed signs, which are 10 feet tall. The board will check out legal height requirements before moving forward. The trustees are also in the process of getting quotes before placing an order for the 54 signs.

Mayor Mark Weiss wondered about the configuration of the street signs on the posts.

“We have streets that are a bit unusual,” said the mayor, who pointed out that the village has several winding roads that are not all 90 degrees.

“I would really like to do this before the winter,” Weiss said. “I don’t mind rushing it, but we have to do it right.”
