Hewlett Harbor Notebook: Emergency Preparedness, New Website, Potholes

Trustees discuss numerous issues during July meeting.

Mayor Mark Weiss plans to get recommendations from the fire department as a first step in putting together a village emergency management plan in case of hurricanes and other disasters, he said at the recent trustees meeting.

Weiss said he wants to get walkie-talkies for board members and other officials, so communication is still available in the event that landlines and cell phones go out.

“In the event of an emergency, they are not going to be paying attention to our village – they are going to be paying attention to major thoroughfares,” Weiss said. “They are going to focus on hospitals and on very densely populated communities. I think what we’re learning by watching television and what is going on around the country is that the villages are being asked to step up and take care of themselves.”

Other topics discussed during the meeting:

  • An updated website is in the works, where residents can submit complaints, provide their emergency contact information, and will include several other new informative and interactive features. The village is also creating new databases that will provide the board with “at a glance” informative reports about the village.
“This will provide good, accurate reporting for the village,” Trustee Leonard Oppenheimer said.
  • The board approved the use of a new complaint form that will make responding to residents’ queries and complaints through phone calls more efficient.
  • Trustee Michael Yohai reported that there were 12 moving violations in the past month, which he claims is a higher figure than usual.
“I’m glad to see the police responded to our requests of enforcing the traffic regulations,” Yohai said.
  • Repairs to the maintenance truck are underway and should be completed by September. The board is also getting a jump on preparing for winter by making sure the village will have enough sand and salt to deal with snowstorms.
  • In an effort to fix 16 potholes throughout the village, trustees are in the process of accepting bids from several street repair vendors, looking for a contractor who will do quality work at a reasonable price.
