Update: Hewlett-Woodmere Budget Passes

Fiscal plan is 1.24 percent higher than last year's.

Update: By a vote of 273-94, voters have passed Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library's proposed budget. Original story follows.

The is expected to reduce staffing and salaries with this year’s proposed $5,962,624 budget, which is up for vote on Tuesday.

The proposed 2012-13 fiscal plan is a $73,221, or 1.24 percent, increase over last year’s budget and will pay for services, personnel, library materials and general operations.

Library Director Susan De Sciora told the Nassau Herald that increased online access to HWPL’s resources, including the borrowing of eBooks, accounts for some of the increase.

“There is a shift from old to new, and while the old still exists, not everyone is used to the new yet,” she said. “We still serve the broad range of age groups from infants to 90 year olds.”

About 803 more people utilize the library this year compared to last year, totaling 15,647.

Voting on the budget and an uncontested election for Trustee Shari Braverman will take place in the library’s Boehm Meeting Room from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
