Inwood Civic Worried About Potential Redistricting

Republican plan would place parts of Inwood in two different legislative districts.

Members of the Inwood Civic Association expressed concern about Nassau Republicans' plan to the county, which would place most of Inwood in a newly created legislative district.

Pete Sobol, a vice president of the civic, led a discussion Thursday on the highly debated topic of Inwood and neighboring towns that may very well take place despite the displeasure of community members.

“The situation we are dealing with is not one that is new, but we are working on getting the most sensible and fair resolution,” Sobel said. “Despite the odds against our community, I’ll be sure that our voice is heard and considered in the each decision being made.”

The change would ultimately split Inwood into two, with each part being part of separate legislative districts. A redistricting action is directly based on population shifts, which is determined by census data every 10 years.

Half of Cedarhurst and most of Woodmere would also be placed in the new district. Sobel said he realizes the difficulty in which such a move would create for Inwood in the future as far as town policies and rulings are concerned.

The re-districting will be voted on by the Nassau County Legislature on Monday.

Civic members also discussed the upcoming school elections on Tuesday, May 17. Community members may enter their votes between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

The annual Inwood car show is set to take place on Sunday, June 12. The car showcases may be viewed at the Inwood railroad station plaza between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., followed by a parade of the participating vehicles.

The Inwood Civic Assocation will meet next on June 2 at 8 p.m. at the Leonardo da Vinci 2385 Lodge Order of Sons of Italy at 202 Wanser Avenue, Inwood.
