McCarthy Defeats Becker in 4th Congressional District

Lynbrook resident comes up short against 14-year incumbent.

Longtime incumbent Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-Mineola, defeated Nassau County lawmaker and Lynbrook resident Francis Becker in Tuesday's election for the 4th Congressional District seat. At 4 a.m., McCarthy led 89,828 votes to 77,483 votes.

"Yesterday, the voters of the 4th Congressional District sent a clear message.  They said 'no' to the Party of No, to the distortion of facts and to the politics of division.  They said 'yes' to reason and to government taking aggressive measures to protect consumers, small businesses, taxpayers, and the working class,"  McCarthy said after her victory was announced.

She added: "I'm proud to have helped thousands of constituents in my district office and millions of Americans with the legislation that I've written and helped pass.  I'm grateful for all the support I've gotten over the years and during this race.  Now, I look forward to continuing that work and the challenges ahead: making sure that our economy continues to bounce back and continuing the tradition of bipartisanship that has allowed me to be successful under both Democratic and Republican leadership."

Becker and his campaign manager were still positive about the way things went and thanked voters for their support.

"This has been an absolutely remarkable grassroots campaign," said Becker's campaign manager Hilary Becker. "I have in all my life never witnessed anything like this."

McCarthy, the 14-year incumbent, has served in the 4th Congressional District since 1996, riding a gun-control platform to office after her husband was killed and son badly wounded in the 1993 shooting on the Long Island Rail Road. McCarthy, a lifelong resident of Mineola, is also a nurse, with over 30 years of experience.
