Trio Competes for Lawrence Board Seats; Two Vie to be Next Woodsburgh Mayor

Other Five Towns village elections see no competition.

Village elections in both Lawrence and Woodsburgh will see competition as residents head to the polls on Tuesday. Other village elections have no competition. Here’s a quick look at the candidates:

Lawrence

Incumbent Michael Fragin will be challenged by David Seidemann and Alex Edelman in an at-large election for two seats. Click the links below for the candidates’ response to our questionnaire:

  • Woodsburgh

    Susan Schlaff, who has served as mayor of the village for almost two decades, will not seek reelection because she is moving out of the village.

    Vying to succeed her are Deputy Mayor Ed Mukamal and Trustee Lee Israel.

    • Israel has lived in Woodsburgh for 12 years. He is president of several corporations. Israel also served as president of the Woodmere Club and treasurer of the Woodmere Bay Yacht Club. He has held the titles of road commissioner and treasurer before being elected trustee.

    • Mukamal has served as a trustee in the village since 1982, except for one year, and deputy mayor since 1989. He practices dentistry with offices in Woodmere and Manhattan.

    Incumbents trustees Gary Goffner and Carl Cayne are also seeking reelection, with newcomer Jake Harman challenging them in an at-large election for the two seats.

    • Cayne, a resident of Woodsburgh for three decades, is a Hewlett High School graduate and works in real estate. He has been a trustee for nine years and served on the zoning board and as a fire commissioner.

    • Goffner has lived in Woodsburgh for 16 years and has served on the board for four years. He acts as the village’s roads commissioner. Goffner works in real estate developer and as a pharmacist.

  • Harman, who served as a the village’s budget officer since 2007, is a 15-year resident of Woodsburgh. He is a senior partner at an international accounting firm.

  • Polls will be open at the Keystone Yacht Club, at 190 Woodmere Blvd., on June 18 from noon to 9 p.m.

    Hewlett Harbor

    Deputy Mayor Len Oppenheimer and Trustee Michael Yohai are unchallenged in their bids for new terms. Voting will be held at the village hall at 449 Pepperidge Rd. from noon to 9 p.m.

    Hewlett Bay Park

    Gail Rubel, Alex Salomon and Jay Levy are running for trustee unopposed. Voting will be held at the village hall at 30 Piermont Ave. from noon to 9 p.m.

    Hewlett Neck

    In another uncontested race, Brett Cooper and Michael Levine will seek terms as trustees. Voting will be held at the Keystone Yacht Club.
