Village of Lawrence Notebook: Payment Kinks, Traffic Study and New Golf Program

Trustees discuss issues with a recent transaction at last board meeting.

The still has some kinks in its payment system for outside contractors that need to be worked out, according to trustees at their monthly meeting on June 2.

The village has instituted a new system that requires every order to be approved before checks are cut. However, in a recent case, the firm Sam Schwartz has requested payment from the village for work done in anticipation of a bid, even though Lawrence has no record of the work and a bid was not awarded to the company.

“We should institute clear directions in the future for when a company comes to look at something,” Trustee C. Simon Felder said. “We should have a clear understanding of what we should pay for and what we should not.”

Meanwhile, the trustees discussed a different study conducted by Sam Schwartz. Cones were placed on Rock Hall Road by Causeway to determine where a sidewalk should be installed.

“Generally, what it suggests is the sidewalk should be completely adjacent to the golf course and an island should be installed by the turning lane,” Mayor Martin Oliner said. “We’re trying to balance the needs of pedestrians and drivers while keeping traffic flow in mind.”

The trustees will continue to discuss the study, since, as they pointed out, there’s no urgent need for changes now.

New program at golf course

The trustees approved a new program at the village-owned that they hope will provide some much-needed revenue to the flagging club.

Golf outings will now be held every month on Wednesdays that are open to anyone for $120 per person. There will be a minimum 32-player requirement; parties of less than that will still have to pay for 32 golfers.
