Woodsburgh Honors Trustee After 15 Years of Work

Dr. Barry Sporer steps down from seat after first being elected in 1995.

For Dr. Barry Sporer, it all started with a stop sign.

About 15 years ago, he and his family moved to Woodsburgh and soon discovered that some streets lacked sidewalks, he said. When a speeding bus startled his son, Sporer appealed to a member of the of trustees to install a stop sign and was denied.

"Susan [Schlaff] said that if you don't like it, the trustee is up for reelection in June, and that's what I did," said Sporer, who ran for trustee on the same ticket as Schlaff. "My first order of business as trustee was putting that stop sign in."

Schlaff, who is now mayor, and other members of the board awarded Sporer yesterday with a certificate of appreciation for his service as a trustee on the board. Sporer resigned Monday because he is moving out of the community.

"It has enhanced my living in Woodsburgh," Sporer said of his service. He added that he is most proud that the board was able to improve the village's infrastructure while being fiscally responsible.

Michael Krasne was chosen by the board to fill the unexpired term of Sporer.

"I'm sorry he's moving out of our village," Schlaff said. "He did terrific work over his tenure. He was a very dedicated elected official and he always put the village's needs first."
