Hatzalah Moves into Former Woodmere Citgo Station

Ambulance service moves to location after meeting backlash at former site.

After facing community backlash at another location, Jewish ambulance service Hatzalah recently purchased the site of the former Citgo station on West Broadway at Forest Avenue in Woodmere and is housing two ambulances there.

Hatzalah had bought and leveled a house at the corner of Grant Avenue and West Broadway — about a block away from the current site — to park the ambulances. The organization had fought and won several legal and zone battles for the use of that property, the Jewish Star reported, but decided to move to a site without any issues.

Rabbi Elozer Kanner, one of the coordinators of the local Chevra Hatzalah of the Rockaways and Nassau County, told the Star, “The community didn’t want us there. This is better. This worked.”

The two ambulances serve North Woodmere, Woodmere, Cedarhurst, East Rockaway, and Hewlett. Hatzalah will renovate the former Citgo building and remove the gas tanks and pumps.
