HAFTR Raises $1,700 for Sandy Victims at B-Ball Game

Family, friends and alumni of deceased student honor his memory at alumni competition.

HAFTR High School alumni on Sunday raised about $1,700 for families struggling to recover from Hurricane Sandy at a memorial basketball dedicated to 14-year-old Jacob Greenberg, who died of heart issues after collapsing on the school’s front lawn eight years ago.

About 100 people came out to watch students from the 2006 through 2011 classes return in an all-star alumni game at HAFTR’s new gym, the “Hawk’s Nest.”

Greenberg's family was in attendance along with his friends and teachers.

“Even though he was only 14, Jacob was a role model to me,” said Yoni Lipshitz, a classmate and friend of Jacob's who organized the event.

Aaron D. Neufeld, another of Jacob's friends who co-organized the game, said, “Jacob was always there for his friends and was the first person to want to help out. What better way to honor his memory than by allowing him to continue to help others by raising funds for those who currently need them, all in his name.”
