HAFTR Middle School Flames Wins Hockey Championship

Teams beats ASHAR in double overtime.

The HAFTR Flames defeated ASHAR 5-4 in double overtime and are now the Metropolitan Yeshiva Junior High Hockey League Champions.

The victory came thanks to the leadership of captain Yehuda Segelnick, a stellar performance by assistant captain Ryan Gluck, one of the league’s top goalies, and the offensive prowess of assistant captain and MVP Zachary Kramer.

The road to the championship began with a quarterfinals 3-2 double overtime win against Flatbush with the game winner scored by Jack Winkler. Then through HALB in the semi-finals with a 4-2 win, with all four goals scored by Zachary Kramer. And, of course, the finals where it took five periods of hockey to decide who was going to be champion.

Assistant captain Justin Lish scored a goal; Zachary Kramer and Jack Winkler, who were reunited on the first line several times throughout the game, each had two goals. It was a beautiful backhand pass by Zachary to Jack in the second overtime period that "iced" the championship for the Flames.

Coached by Kenny Gluck and Jonathan Glaubach, the entire team's game conduct, middot and excellent sportsmanship throughout the season will be admired by other teams for years to come.

Celebration of the Arts

held its Fourth Grade Evening Celebration of the Arts. The show, a combination of visual art and music, was lead by Lower School Art Director Rena Mosak and Art Assistant Royce Maron, alongside Lower School Music Director Janet Goldman. The students were inspired by prominent artists in both fields, including Giacometti, Kandinsky, Delaney and Warhol.

Guests were greeted by the children who provided coat check services and served hor d'oeuvres. The guests took part in student-run tours of the sculpture gallery alongside the water fountains in the Lower School’s new atrium and the Eldridge Street mural inspired by Romare Bearden’s “The Block.”

Meanwhile, students — playing recorders, violins and drums — performed songs such as “Tradition” from Fiddler on the Roof, Strauss’s “The Blue Danube Waltz,” “Toredador” from Carmen, and “Ahavat Yisrael Baneshama” by David Avramson.

HAFTR Middle School Collects Food for JCC

In the spirit of the Pesach, HAFTR Middle School ran a food drive to help needy families in the local area. The program, which collected both Kosher for Pesach and chametz items, was spearheaded by Rabbi Yitzie Klapper. The food was donated to the local and proved to be a huge success.
