HAFTR News: NYS Scholarship, Hanukkah Celebration

Students receive nod and 4-year-olds celebrate the festival of lights.

Four high-achieving students in the senior class have been nominated for the 2012 Scholarship for Academic Excellence, sponsored by the New York State Department of Education.

Congratulations to our nominees: Hillel Friedman, Gabby Lovett, Felicia Scharf and Rebecca Slochowsky.

Pending approval from the NYS Legislature, 8,000 scholarships will be distributed to students in New York; 2,000 scholarships have a value of $1,500 and 6,000 scholarships have a value of $500, renewable for four years.

Winners are chosen based on weighted scores on certain NYS Regents exams. In addition, students must attend a New York State college in order to receive the award.

HAFTR’s Early Childhood Celebrates Hanukkah

HAFTR welcomed parents, siblings, grandparents, and even great grandparents on Sunday to celebrate the holiday of Hanukkah with 4-year-old students.

The morning began with a breakfast, and the day’s highlight was the outstanding performance by the HAFTR students as they welcomed the holiday. Guests snapped along as the children sang a latke song to the tune of The Addams Family theme song.

The crowd rejoiced as the children recited the story of Hanukkah through song. The students’ final number was especially memorable, as HAFTR children waved flashlights in the air while singing that Jerusalem is the light of the world.
