Hewlett Elementary Students Send Trees to the Troops

Fifth graders participate in program and see cargo off at JFK Airport.

is proud to be a part of “Trees for the Troops,” a wonderful program that has sent 5,000 trees to the troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan for the past eight years.

Co-sponsored by Dee’s Nursery and DHL, Dee’s supplies the trees and DHL provides the shipping overseas. HES students made ornaments and holiday cards to send along with the trees.

Fifth graders from Lauren Hargreaves’ and Stephanie Schwartz's classes participated in a moving ceremony at Dee’s Nursery on Monday, Dec. 5, where students led in the singing of the national anthem and read letters they had written to soldiers thanking them for their service and heroism. The children listened to speeches from the organizers of the program as well as returning soldiers and veterans of foreign wars.
