Hewlett Falls to Rival Lynbrook, 11-3

Three Lynbrook players score hat tricks in victory at South Middle School.

In a battle of Conference III rivals, Lynbrook defeated Hewlett, 11-3, on a foggy Wednesday afternoon at South Middle School.

Hewlett (2-1) opened the scoring on a nice crossing pattern, with Zach Richman dishing to a wide-open Josh Rivin in front, but did not score again until six minutes into the third quarter. By that time, Lynbrook (2-2) had already scored eight goals of its own.

"I'm disappointed in the effort, not the loss," Hewlett coach Chris Passuello said. "It was a poor effort. We didn't play well at all. We got out-toughed, out-ground balled. I'm disappointed because I think we're better than that. We gotta move forward, and we still got a lot to play."

Lynbrook's offense was on fire, with attack-man Anthony Palmine, attack-man Steven Marrandino, and midfielder Luke Spitzer each contributing a hat trick.

Hewlett certainly had opportunities to get back in the game, but Lynbrook goaltender Ethan Mirenberg was a brick wall, making seven of his 12 saves in the second half.

Lynbrook coach Bill Leighley said his team may have been fired up after a heartbreaking 10-9 loss to Long Beach last week, and that the Hewlett-Lynbrook rivalry definitely added some adrenaline to the match-up.

"We just decided to put a chip on our shoulder, and this is just a big rivalry … the kids may have gotten up a little more for this game than they did against Long Beach," he said. "It's a big rivalry and we love that it is."

Rivin, Mark Rizzo and Chris Loria scored Hewlett's three goals. Goaltender Michael Fine had four saves.

Hewlett will host Holy Trinity on Saturday at 7 p.m. Lynbrook travels to Bethpage on Saturday at 11 a.m.
