Hewlett High School Honors Senior Athletes

Students presented with awards and scholarships for their outstanding achievements.

hosted the Annual Senior Athletic Awards Night on June 9 to honor the highest achievers in school sports throughout the year.

Coaches and assistant coaches presented both the Coaches Award Winners for the most outstanding student-athlete on their specific team, as well as the Sportsmanship Award Winners for the student-athlete who presented the highest ideals of fair play and respect to fellow opponents.

Following team awards, Athletic Director Jeff Malis led presentations of individual award winners for the 2010-2011 school year.

Niv Sultan and Vanessa Pierre were awarded the Male and Female Athlete of the Year for their hard work, dedication and outstanding success in their respective sports.

Sultan, who won the Sportsmanship Award voted on by his coaches, was recently nominated as the in the United States along with receiving a scholarship to play football at as their top recruit in the fall.

Pierre was a six-time all-county track star, including a four-time defending county champion in the long jump as well as the first track athlete from Hewlett to compete on the national level.

Both Sultan and Pierre also received the Independent Bus Company Frances Levett Memorial Scholarship in accordance to their Athlete of the Year Awards.

Neil Cohen and Marsha Cohen received the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards. The achievements were given to a senior who is a multiple sport athlete who encompasses qualities of a team player, leader and role model. Both Cohens were awarded the Football Parents’ Association Scholarship Award as well, and Marsha received a third award, the Bill Munch Memorial Scholarship.

The Physical Education Students of the Year went to Jake Geiger and Danielle Kandel, athletes who not only excel on the field, but in the classroom as well. Kandel was also given the Lance Taragano Memorial “Spirit” Scholarship Award. Landon Acriche won the same award for male athletes.

The U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar/Athlete Award went to Brandon Reisch for male athletes and Elan Yochai for female athletes. The U.S. Marine Corp Distinguished Athlete Award went to Christopher Loria and Allison Venditti, who also received the Sidney Tannenbaum Memorial Scholarship. The U.S. Navy Achievement Award was given to Jonahiby “JJ” Tauil and Jessica Venditti.

The Sports Council Howie Stark Memorial Scholarship, given to an athlete who participated in three different sports and displayed excellent leadership qualities, was awarded to Nicholas San Phillipo and Ashley Himmelstein.

The Hy Podber/Howie Stark Memorial Scholarship Award, given to the two top baseball players at Hewlett, was given to both Ross Kleinrock and Jake Miller.

Other awards given out at the end of the night were the PTA Award to Spencer Prusack and Elizabeth Kamlet, the Robert Hufschmidt Memorial Scholarship Award to Ryan Vines, the Saul Weidenfeld Memorial Scholarship Award to Russell Schneider, and the Wrestling Ironman Scholarship, to Jordan Browdy, who was also given the Peninsula Kiwanus Domenic Sciarrotta Sr. Memorial Award.
