Hewlett HS Students Learn About What Comes After School

Local professionals visit school to speak about their careers.

George W. Hewlett High School’s recent Career Day was an opportunity for students to stop and think about why they learn what they learn and how they can apply the skills to their future. The theme, Beyond High School, How to Get There from Here, was the basis for the presentations.

Business student interns Rachel Fisher and Lindsay Wasserman worked with Barbara Mattes, chair of the Business Education Department, to prepare for the event by contacting business professionals, creating a schedule, surveying the presenters, preparing a program to distribute and printing thank you certificates. They were on hand to escort presenters to the classes and take pictures. After each presenter completed their presentations, they were thanked and received an award certificate.

The program was presented to about 515 students including 10th graders in Health and Computer Technology and Career courses as well as many other business education classes.

Presenters were alumni, district employees, school board members, parents, and local business people. They work as entrepreneurs, musicians, doctors, lawyers, marketing executives, managers, financial analysts, project coordinators, journalists, insurance brokers, and bankers.

Students were given the opportunity to hear about their career adventures and ask questions about the process. The panelists left the students with some advice for the future.

Jason Liebman, a musician, explained to students “The definition of luck: preparation meets opportunity.”

Susanna Moyer, a fashion designer and professor, felt that this was a great way to have students think about their future.

“Bringing in people from different fields and having conversation with them about what they do and how they got there is crucial at a young age to help students find their way,” she said.

Alexandra Gerber, a member of the class of 2015 said she thought the event “was a great way to learn about a lot of careers, especially for students who don’t know their career path yet.”

Lance Chervinsky, another member of the 2015 class, also learned from the presenters that “There will be a lot of rejection, but you need to never give up and continue to work towards your goals.”

Finally, Val DeNapoli, who will graduate this year, said, “I learned many new things about the real world and I’ve even become more interested in the business world. The speakers applied what we learn in class to a real world job and that was interesting to see.”
