Hewlett-Woodmere Security Guard Credited With Saving a Life

Campus patrol member recently acknowledged by district.

A Hewlett-Woodmere School District campus patrol member last month saved the life of a teacher at Ogden Elementary School.

At about 12:30 p.m. on March 12, CPO Doreen Romano was on duty at the school when she saw a teacher in a classroom in distress, according to the district. The teacher had been eating her lunch when food became lodged in her throat.

“Romano entered the room, assessed what was happening to the teacher, and performed the Heimlich maneuver,” the district said. “There is no doubt CPO Romano’s rapid intervention saved this teacher’s life.”

Romano was acknowledged by the Hewlett-Woodmere Board of Education and administration at the April 17 board meeting.

Campus Patrol personnel, the first responders for the Hewlett-Woodmere school community, receive annual training and re-certification in public safety and emergency response procedures to ensure they are prepared to carry out their assigned duties.
