Lawrence School Board Candidate: Tova Plaut

Patch sent the same questionnaire to all candidates running for school board this year. The following response — which has not been edited by Patch — is from Tova Plaut, who is seeking a seat on the Lawrence Board of Education in an election against Jesse Lunin-Pack and Dov Herman.

Tell us about yourself (age, town, profession, family, etc.)

My name is Tova Plaut. I grew up on Long Island and am the daughter of professional educators and active community volunteers. I have been a proud resident of Cedarhurst for more than 16 years with my husband and five children and enjoy living in our wonderful diverse community. I am dedicated to serving our community with respect and have been involved in community projects for all my adult years. Most recently, I have run five marathons to benefit a camp for children with cancer, helped run a relief center and clean up homes in the aftermath of hurricane Sandy and I have volunteered my time and expertise to a variety of other community projects.

What qualifies you to serve as a member of the school board?

I am a teacher and director of a non sectarian school. I hold a degree in community and human services with a concentration in early childhood studies, a child development credential and New York State Administrator Credential. In addition to these credentials I have also received certificates for training in school health and safety, fiscal management, educational programming, medication administration and other various certification areas. I currently work with a diverse population and I know that as a woman and educator I will bring a unique perspective to the current board which will benefit all the children of District. 15.

Why are you running for the school board?

I believe in children. I am dedicated to providing a quality education for all the children of District 15. It is important for us to create positive learning experiences for all learners and our children deserve to have an educator like me to insure that they receive excellence. In addition, fiscal responsibility is especially important during these economic times. We need creative, independent thinkers like me to help guide the board on solutions which both benefit our students and take fiscal matters in to consideration.

What is your opinion of the budget that has been presented to the community? What you have done something differently with it?

Before the current board was elected, taxes rose in our community by 10% each year. I am committed to keeping our taxes down. Keeping taxes down while providing a high quality education for all of our children is a priority. Maximizing federal, state and private grants is needed to achieve this goal. In addition, community involvement and innovative ideas should be employed to maintain standards of excellence for all our students.

Aside from the budget, what do you think is the biggest issue facing the school district?

The issues before the school board include providing a quality education for all our students and maintaining and improving the services such as special education and busing. As a district it is extremely important that we face these issues with professionalism and honesty.

What is the school district’s greatest strength?

Our greatest strength is our children. They deserve our commitment to providing them with the resources they need to succeed in and out of school. I am devoted to ensuring that they are well prepared to compete in tomorrow’s job market and economy.

What is its greatest weakness?

Science, math and technology are the cornerstones of our children’s future. Innovative programming which includes these vital areas of study and prepares our students for college and careers has already become a priority for our district. Our district has made great gains in this area and continuing on this path by concentrating on these subject areas will groom or students to be true competitors in their chosen careers.

If you are elected, what is the one thing you’d like to see accomplished during your term?

I am dedicated to seeing the achievement of all our children.  I will remain steadfast in my commitment to provide a quality education for all the children in district 15.

Where do you see public education on Long Island going in the future and what role do you hope to have in it?

It is incredibly important for our schools to provide our children with the educational knowledge and ability to compete. Our role is to create flexible, adaptable learners who can navigate the career paths they have chosen. My educational background and management expertise will be used to benefit our community of learners and help provide them with the high level of educational standards needed to succeed.

Would you like to add anything else?

It is time for there to be a woman on our school board. As a mother and educator I am eminently qualified for this position. My professional knowledge would be a tremendous asset to the board and our community. Vote for me on May 21 to guarantee that the candidate with the best credentials and track record for community service is there to help you and your children.
