Woodmere MS Student to Study Electrical Engineering

Nathan Roblin to take part in Johns Hopkins University gifted program.

A Woodmere Middle School eighth grader will be studying electrical engineering this summer at a Johns Hopkins University gifted program.

Nathan Roblin, of Woodmere, will take part in the CTY Summer Program Electrical Engineering at Dickinson College, where students learn the basics of current, voltage, resistance, energy and magnetism. Participants also learn about cutting edge topics in the field of electrical engineering, including the physics behind solar cells and solid-state electronics. According to a press release, the goal of the program is for students to have a better understanding of electrical engineering and its application to everyday life.

Nathan qualified for the program by participating in CTY’s Annual Talent Search, which tests students with above-grade level tests designed for older students as a means of gaining insight into their abilities, the release says. Seventh and eighth graders take the SAT or ACT — the same tests used for college admissions, while second through sixth graders take the School and College Ability Test, a test scaled for younger students.

Nathan is one of seven WMS students to be bussed every day to Hewlett High School for math class. He also plays in both the concert band and jazz ensemble.

“Patty and I would like to publicly thank all of the fantastic teachers Nate's had at Franklin, Hewlett Elementary and Woodmere Middle School, and in particular, his HES Discovery teacher, Janine Torresson, and Jonathan Holford, the WMS band director,” said John Roblin, Nathan’s father. “He continually amazes us with his achievements and talents. If you get a chance to meet him in person, ask him to recite Pi.”
