Bulldogs Defeated by Trojans in Second Matchup

Hewlett gets shut out by Garden City High School on their turf.

The Hewlett Bulldogs were unable to produce any runs for a second time in a row Thursday against the Garden City Trojans.

After giving up 15 runs in seven innings, the boys only managed a few hits, and for the fourth straight game, they lost by double digits.

While only producing two runs in the last three games, making the offensive attack has become Hewlett’s biggest problem this year, according to Hewlett head coach Andy DeBernado.

"From here, we’ve got to take some live batting practice and just let the boys take cuts at the ball,” DeBernardo said. “We’ve got to go to the batting cages.”

RBI singles from Trojan seniors Brandon Couchi and Matt Focella, as well as a two-run hit from Brandon Samardich gave the Conference A-I team a 4-0 lead in the first inning, providing enough runs for the win.

Frank Cordio, senior and starting pitching for Garden City, dominated Hewlett batters with his curveball, throwing five scoreless innings.

“I was able to control it well and keep the other team under control,” Cordio said.

Hewlett is currently winless this year in the Conference A-II, however DeBernardo and the boys are far from giving up.

After leaving Frank Kiernan Field last night, they could think of nothing more than the remainder of the season.

“We just got to keep on getting better,” DeBernardo said. “Tomorrow’s a new day.”

The Bulldogs have the weekend off for practice and play at home on Monday against New Hyde Park, also winless this year.
