Lacrosse Roundup: Bulldogs Have Split Record After First Four Games
Hewlett ends four-pack of games by crushing Kennedy Bellmore.
The Hewlett Boys Lacrosse program has a long history of winning at the pinnacle of Long Island competition over the years. Under the guidance of ninth-year head coach Chris Passuello, the Bulldogs are charged up and ready to make another run to the peak of the sport.
Here is an overview of how Hewlett has fared through the first four games of the 2011 season, where the team currently holds a 2-2 record as they head into league play at weeks end.
The Bulldogs kicked off their season at home on March 23 against visiting Great Neck South. Jake Geiger scored a new career-high five goals to lead his team to a 13-5 victory. Chris Loria collected a game-high seven points with three goals and fours assists against the Rebels.

In another non-league game, Hewlett traveled to Long Beach's turf to take on a tough Marines team on March 29. The Bulldogs led at the end of the first quarter and trailed by just one at halftime, but were held scoreless in the second half as Long Beach pulled away for a 15-7 win. Jake Geiger was the leading scorer again for the team with three goals.
Just three days later on April 1, Hewlett faced another tough opponent in South Side on the road in an attempt to rebound from their first loss of the season. The Bulldogs and Cyclones traded leads throughout the game, eventually heading into overtime, where the two teams remained tied after the first extra period. Hewlett lost their second game in a row as South Side’s Bryan Gerrato scored the game-winner with just two seconds remaining in the second overtime.

Falling under a .500 record early was not what Hewlett was hoping for, so to avoid falling even further below that mark, the team looked to make a statement against Kennedy Bellmore on April 5 at home. Geiger set a new career-high in goals with six, and eight points total against the Cougars. Hewlett dominated from start to finish, picking up a big 15-5 win.
“We are still without three starters who are injured, so I’ve been telling some of my younger guys to look to step up,” Passuello said. “If we get healthy and keep working hard then down the stretch, we can be doing something big.”
