Lawrence Girls B-Ball Loses Season Opener

The Lady Golden Tornadoes falls to Oceanside 55-50.

A good crowd turned out on Thursday to see the sixth annual season Tip-Off Classic at Oceanside High School between Oceanside and Lawrence. The Lady Golden Tornadoes performed admirably, but fell short in their quest for a victory, 55-50.

"We started out really slow and weren't able to get back on our feet," said Lawrence Head Coach George Klein. "We didn't shoot the ball well, particularly in the first half."

Oceanside started out the game with a dominating 10-0 lead before the Lady Tornadoes were able to get into the flow.

Senior guard Farrah Desvarieux scored most of Lawrence's points in the first half and kept them in the game. They were down only 5 points at halftime, 23-18.

"To our credit I thought we came out and played a lot tougher in the second half," Klein said.

Junior Gabrielle Golan began to find her stroke and senior forward Shelby Lebo hit a big three pointer to cut Oceanside's second half lead to 43-40.

That was as close as Lawrence would come before Oceanside pulled away.

"We just weren't able to pull even with them," Klein said. "We got close, but came up short in the end."

Desvarieux led the team with 19 points. Gabrielle Golan had 11 points and sophomore Nicole Robinson scored 8 points and had 12 rebounds.

The Lady Golden Tornadoes' next game is at Levittown Division on Wednesday.
