Lawrence Girls B-Ball Wins Conference Opener Against Hewlett

Lady Golden Tornadoes give up big lead but are able to hold on for a victory.

The first half of Friday's basketball game was a cakewalk for the Lady Golden Tornadoes against conference foe Hewlett. Lawrence was beating the Lady Bulldogs with a score of 16-3 in the first quarter and 28-8 at halftime.

The Bulldogs managed a few points in the third but Lawrence was up by twenty points to start the fourth quarter.

"We started off fast and built up a nice lead for ourselves," said Lawrence Head Coach George Klein. "But Hewlett made a nice run towards the end of the game to give us a scare."

The run was led by Hewlett star point guard Sam DiSalvo, who scored multiple baskets for the Bulldogs in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter.

At the end of third quarter Lawrence lead 37-17. With two minutes left in the fourth the gap had narrowed to only four points with the Golden Tornadoes leading 39-35.

That would be the last points Hewlett would score as point guard Farrah Desvarieux and junior Gabrielle Golan hit key baskets at the end to give Lawrence the 43-35 victory.

Heroes: Desvariuex and Golan, who made key baskets at the end of the game to seal the victory for Lawrence.

Turning Point: After Hewlett made its furious comeback, the Lady Golden Tornadoes were able to keep their poise at the end of the game. With 3:18 left on the clock, Klein made substitutions to get Nicole Robinson, Natalie Leger and Desvariuex back on the floor. It was the right move as the three starters held their composure and withstood the Bulldog onslaught.

Quote: "We hit some big shots at the end of the game and were lucky to get out of here with a win against them," Klein said.

"We made a valiant effort to get back into this game," said Hewlett Head Coach Tommy Johnson. "Sam [Disalvo] shot incredibly and we were almost able to tie it up in the fourth. I would have liked us to play more competitively in the first half though."

Bottom Line: The Lady Golden Tornadoes held it together when things got tight at the end of the game. It was a good sign as they now will have to deal with similar types of teams in conference play.

Stats: Sophomore Robinson had 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead Lawrence. Leger had 12 points. Desvariuex had 5 points and 6 assists.
