Lawrence Tops Huntington to Capture LI Championship

The Lawrence High School Golden Tornadoes are back atop the mountain.

The football team, led by Jordan Fredericks, Joe Capobianco and Elijah Jones, topped Huntington Saturday to capture the Long Island Championship, 41-32 at Stony Brook University's LaValle Stadium.

“I’m so proud of these boys,” Coach Joe Martillotti said. “They fought hard and now they’re champions.”

Lawrence started off the game on fire, scoring touchdowns on their first two possessions. First Joe Capobianco connected with Sam Locascio for a 13-yard TD, and then Jordan Fredericks ran it in from 5-yards out.

“The feeling is unbelievable,” Fredericks said. “I just can’t really describe it. We did it!”

Huntington responded with two scores of their own, as Troy Greene ran it in from 20-yards out and Levar Butts added a 1-yard run. Two missed extra points by Justin Tesoriero kept the game at 14-12 Lawrence.

Elijah Jones, who had 159 yards receiving in the first half alone, caught an 82-yard pass to increase Lawrence’s lead. Fredericks caught a 22-yard screen pass on fourth down for Capobianco’s 100th career TD pass. Butts responded with a 42-yard TD run, but Fredericks’ 30-yard scamper gave Lawrence a 34-18 lead at half.

Huntington scored on the first drive of the second half on a 44-yard run by Levar Butts. After Lawrence drove down the field, an interception by Christian Jamison ended the threat.

Later in the fourth, a great punt by Joe Capobianco set up Huntington inside the 10, and Lawrence forced a fumble, and Nick Fountis recovered in the end zone. It was 41-26 Lawrence. With 48 seconds left, Infinite Tucker caught an 8-yard pass from Benjamin Kocis, but it wasn’t enough, as the final was 41-32 Lawrence.
