Conversations With Strangers on Lines (Not Online)

Talking to strangers (if they had candy I would most likely take it from them). I'm not your cousin's friend from Jericho.

I have a friend that gets annoyed at me for talking to people — which is most of the time.

Whenever we go somewhere, I end up involved in random conversations, but usually not at my behest.

She first brought this up to me this summer — we were in the Hamptons, waiting on line for the ladies room, when a woman on line noticed a ring I was wearing and asked me about it. We started talking about where our kids went to camp; who she knew from Hewlett; who I knew from Roslyn. Then it was her turn to go in and sadly we parted ways. My friend, let's call her D, turned to me and asked if I realized that I did that everywhere.

I do.

About a week later I was at the Gap in Oceanside waiting on line. A woman behind me asked about a dress I was buying. Someone taps me on shoulder and says "again???" Turned around, it was D.

Yup, again.

Dinner at Da Nicola, sitting at bar with D, discussing True Blood season finale. Cute boy sitting at bar overhears and wants in on the conversation. (This time she didn't mind as much). Oh, and BTW, I hated the last episode.

I think I have one of those faces that people find familiar. I'm usually mistaken for sisters, aunts, cousins of people I've never met.

And what's up with the people that you know that don't say hello? The friend of a friend you've been introduced to a million times that acts like they have never met you? Or you can be standing like an inch away from someone and they pretend they don't see you? HELLLOOOOO, awkward. For you, not me. I'll talk to your friend.
