To help rejuvenate their image and boost self-esteem, the JCC of the Greater Five Towns treated over 50 out-of-work women to a day of massage, make-up, hair styling and manicures services as part of Jewish Social Action Month.

The JCC, through a UJA-funded grant, hosted a day of beauty on Sunday, Nov. 13, for women who participate in the JCC’s “Connect-to-Care” program that provides support to those who have lost their jobs due to the economy. Many of the clients held prestigious employment positions, but due to the downward economy found themselves unemployed, forcing a dramatic change in lifestyle.

The women were treated to a day of massages, hair styling and manicures donated by local professionals and volunteers as a way to give hope and empowerment to the women as they take on the grueling and often discouraging task of looking for a job.

“I can’t remember the last time I had a manicure,” said one woman as she held out her hands proudly.

Another woman excitedly added, “I’ve never indulged myself with all these services in one day. I feel human again and 10 years younger!”

The joy, laughter and camaraderie of the women was contagious as they held shopping bags of gently-used professional clothing that was donated by residents of the Five Towns. It was as though they had gone on a group-shopping spree.

The JCC expresses its gratitude to nearly 30 volunteers who helped make the event successful and to those who generously contributed the beautiful clothing.

Special thanks go to the following professionals who donated their time and expertise: massage therapists Sheri Herskovitz, Leah Steinman and Esther of Peaceful Presence Yoga Studio; make-up artist Chavie Katz from Lashes2lips; hair styling by Sara Winder and of Woodmere, and manicures by of Woodmere.

In addition, a special inspirational talk was given by noted lecturer Lisa Okun about “Falling in Love with Yourself Again.”
