Donations will be accepted until April 15.

A Woodmere dentistry practice will be collecting donations for the next few weeks to send to soldiers and dentists serving overseas.

is collecting items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss, lip balm, hotel toiletries, sunscreen and non-perishable food (no glass) for its Support The Troops program. Donations will be accepted through April 15 at the practice’s offices at 141 Franklin Place in Woodmere and 31 Merrick Avenue, Suite 140, in Merrick.

"Military dentists work in special conditions, usually maintaining the oral health of soldiers on military bases, but they are frequently transferred and also get deployed,” said Dr. John Santopolo of Long Island Endodontics. “Because of their sacrifices, and the importance of safe and predictable care for the soldiers being treated, it’s essential that military dentists, active duty personnel, veterans and their families receive the appreciation and support they deserve."

The drive is part of the sixth annual Root Canal Awareness Week, starting on March 25, which hopes to encourage people who need it to undergo the procedure.
