Town Declares Snow Emergency, Opens Warming Centers

Residents are asked to remove cars from town roadways when a snow emergency is in effect to help salters and plows maintain as wide a path as possible through local streets.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray has declared a snow emergency as the second major winter storm of 2014 bears down on the region.

The town’s highway department has salted roadways and commuter parking fields and plows are currently clearing streets as snow begins to accumulate Tuesday.

“Our town continued its proactive practice of having salt spreaders on the streets prior to snow falling and snow plows sprang into action as snow began to accumulate,” Murray said.

The supervisor recommends residents limit travel at this time and homeowners remove cars from roadways so that town snow removal crews can "effectively and efficiently" salt and plow streets.

The Town has also opened more than a dozen warming centers to provide "warmth, good company and hot coffee" during the "cold snap" accompanying this latest storm. The following 15 locations will be open as warming centers from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday:
