Zomick's: Our Bakery a 'Model For Food Safety'

International kosher bakery refutes pest claims, but inspections from the state Department of Agriculture reveal otherwise.

The internationally known kosher bakery Zomick’s is refuting claims of a major pest problem that has plagued the company’s Inwood factory since 2005, stating that it is a “model for food safety.”

Records from the state's Department of Agriculture and Markets obtained by Patch state that inspectors have found vermin including cockroaches, beetles, mice and flies at the Inwood location.

Zomick’s said in a statement Friday that the pest problem is a thing of the past and that there have only been “a few isolated incidents years ago."

However, according to the state, the bakery has failed 10 of its last 17 inspections, including most recently on Oct. 4 2012.

Found on the Oct. 4 inspection were 15-20 live cockroaches in various areas of the factory and “10-15 live grain beetles were observed on the exteriors of bags of infested corn meal in the storage area.”

In June of 2012, Zomick’s said it voluntarily brought in inspectors from the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF), a not-for-profit accredited third party certification agency.

“[NSF’s] review of our procedures to safeguard public health and safety passed with flying colors,” Zomick’s said in a statement.

Patch called NSF to verify this, however, a representative said they do not confirm whether a client has passed/failed an inspection.

"Inspections are pass/fail; it's not a certification," the representative added.

Zomick’s may have passed the NSF’s review, but one month later on July 10, the Department of Agriculture and Markets failed the bakery for multiple pest problems, including nearly 100 live cockroaches throughout the factory.

Inspectors say they also found the following products to be infested with beetles:
  • Approximately 20 pounds of bulk baking powder
  • Approximately 10 pounds of bulk bread flour
  • Approximately 10 pounds of bulk wheat gluten
The bakery did, however, pass its most recent inspection on Feb. 28, 2013, which Patch mentioned in the initial article. The factory will look to pass its second straight inspection in August when the Department of Agriculture and Markets is scheduled to return.
