Teachers 'Coordinate' to Demonstrate Lack of Contract

Hewlett-Woodmere Faculty Association members wear red on first day of school.

Students returning to Hewlett-Woodmere schools on Tuesday may have noticed something about their teachers — many of them were wearing red.

The teachers wore the color to “symbolize solidarity” as their contract expired on June 30 without a new one set, according to Ric Stark, president of Hewlett-Woodmere Faculty Association. The most recent teacher contract was signed five years ago. All provisions signed under the previous contract remain in effect.

“When a contract isn’t settled, the district could be a difficult place to work,” Stark said. “We’re hopeful to reach a fair agreement in a reasonable amount of time.”

Stark said that it’s been 20 years since Hewlett-Woodmere teachers have worked without a contract.

The district did not return a request for comment by press time.
